The Fairmiles Just Transition Principles

The Fairmiles Just Transition Principles have been developed to support more thoughtful, fair, and practical decision-making as global supply chains respond to sustainability and climate-related pressures.

As businesses, retailers, and policymakers introduce new targets, standards, and requirements, there is a growing risk that well-intentioned actions can have unintended negative consequences - particularly for producers, workers, and communities in the Global South who depend on access to international markets for their livelihoods.

The principles are designed as a simple framework to help organisations pause and ask the right questions before change is implemented. They focus on understanding risk and resilience, considering impacts on people, applying proportionality, using data responsibly, and ensuring that any transition is fair and inclusive.

Have your Say

We are now inviting feedback on the principles as part of an open consultation. Your input will help us test whether they are clear, relevant, and useful in practice, and how they might be strengthened or refined.

We are keen to hear views from across the supply chain, including buyers, retailers, suppliers, producers, NGOs, researchers, and others.

There are no right or wrong answers. We are interested in how these principles land with different stakeholders, whether they are useful, and what could be improved.
